Dear Mr. Harrell,
It is imposible for us to find words to thank you for your wonderful support of our 66th Birthday celebration at Springfield Mall.

It was pleasure towork with you and your brother, and your gentle manner made the girls feel much at ease during their performances.

You brought professionalism into our program and made it possible for the audience to truly share the girls' wonderful experience, Carl and I truly enjoyed taking you out for dinner so that we could share the events of the previous week and plan for "Girl Scouts in Action 1979".

With kindest regards,

Dear Frank,

Thank you very much for your input and assistance for the Arts in Recreation Seminar. The tech workshop was extremely interesting and I believe a completely new experience for most of the students.

The students were quite inspired. When we did our Story Theater Workshop on Sunday, they insisted on lighting effects! They learned their lessons well. Needless to say, I was very proud of them.

I hope that we will have another opportunity to work together in the future.

Sincerely,
Pat Archer

Dear Frank,

Again many thanks for a tremendously successful technical workshop during the Arts in Recreation seminar on May 17. The students enjoyed it very much. They were on their toes during the ballet observing the lighting and special effects. They were very favorably impressed by the Center and the variety it offers.

It was a great pleasure for me to work with the Center staff and the students. Overall, I believe the May session went even better than the one in December.

I look forward to working with you again in the future.
Sincerely,
Pat Archer

Dear Ms. Jones:

Sergeant Steven Smylie has brought to my attention the assistance rendered to officers of the Reston District Station by Mr. Brian Murphy and Mr. Frank Harrell. During the night of December 17, 1986, officers were called to investigate a case of an 11 year old boy who was missing from his home on Wainwright Drive. Due to inclement weather the officers were unable to use the motorcycles to check the pathways. Faced with the task of doing this on foot an inquiry was made as to whether RHOA would be able to provide a Cushman maintenance vehicle to assist in the search. The request was quickly granted and we were able to expeditiously complete a search of the pathways in north Reston.

Although it was later determined that the boy had safely made his way to his old neighborhood in Arlington, we were able to alleviate the immediate concern that he had injured himself on the pathways.

The assistance provided by Mr. Murphy and Mr. Harrell highlights the excellent relationship we share with the Reston Homeowners Association. It is gratifying to note such cooperation. Please convey my appreciation to both gentlemen.

Sincerely,
Captain Richard J. Rappoport

Reston Association

June 25, 1992

(Note: In 1991, after returning from a 2 year sabbatical my partner and I had taken to travel the county in our trailer, we found out I had AIDS and only expected to live another 6 months. About a year later I was still alive and needed something to do so I started volunteering at the Reston Association (home owners association) using the experience I had gained previously as a computer assistant (see the "Scratch Pad" article on the newspaper page). I worked on software and hardware problems, and taught classes on the new PC network they were installing. After I had been volunteering about 6 months, they began installing the PC netowrk to replace the mini-computer system they had been using. One morning, shortly after we had activated Word Perfect, I realized there was a serious security issue with how the system was set up. Everybody in the system was saving their preferences in the same place on the server. Every time someone saved a setting, all the other users suddenly had those same settings. I quickly typed up a memo, got it approved by my immediate supervisor and passed it around the office telling people not to save any settings until I could get to them and adjust their accounts. The next day the head of the computer department removed all my access permissions to the system (without telling me) and sent me a memo commanding me to come in the following morning for an emergency conference at 8:00 am. At 11:00 am, I was still waiting for her to show up. When I finally found her in the hallway, she claimed not to know anything about a meeting. I quit right then. This short letter was sent to me by the general manager several weeks later. Not too long after I left, as a result of my experience, the association set up an official volunteer program which apparently is still in operation.)

Dear Frank,

I would like to thank you on behalf of myself and the staff for the fine work you did for us here at Reston Association. You are already being sorely missed.

You are an extremely talented person and so diversified, please understand that everything you did for us was really appreciated.

Sincerely,
Vicky Wingert

(Note: this letter was sent to me after I quit working at the Harpers Ferry Center in thanks for the volunteer work I had done there over the previous year. The drive from my house to Harpers Ferry Center was over 100 miles a day and had become impractical. Shortly after that, I started volunteering at Manassas Battlefield Park as a computer specialist. See the Potomac News Newspaper article.)
